3CE Chosen to Power U.S. Census Bureau Schedule B Search Engine

MONTREAL -- (February 10, 2010) - The United States Census Bureau has selected 3CE Technologies to provide enhanced Harmonized System (HS) classification search on its website.

U.S. exporters and authorized agents are legally required to file electronic export information when shipping goods abroad. To complete their export declarations, exporters must classify products using HS-based Schedule B codes. The Census Bureau's Foreign Trade Division provides a keyword-based search tool to help exporters determine their proper commodity codes. Currently, the Schedule B search tool receives approximately 3 million queries per year, and is the most commonly used method for classifying products.

Despite its popularity, the current Schedule B tool is limited. While every physical product is classifiable in the Schedule B nomenclature, not every item can be classified using the keyword-based tool. With increasingly complex and diverse products, misclassification is common. Furthermore, keyword (even those with thesauruses) simply cannot classify many products.

In selecting 3CE, the Census Bureau has found a way to make commodity classification easier and ensure more accurate trade statistics.

The new schedule B search engine will provide a smarter, more intuitive, and more accurate way to classify products. 3CE is uniquely able to understand and interpret common commercial product information, and drives the commodity classification process by interacting intelligently and intuitively with users.

"We are pleased to have been chosen by an organization whose mission is devoted to statistical reporting accuracy," said 3CE President Randy Rotchin. "We look forward to helping US exporters with their commodity classification needs."

The 3CE-powered Schedule B search engine will be available at http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/schedules/b/#search   beginning March 1.
